My name is Carol Lovekin. I am a writer, a mother & a feminist. My heritage is Irish although I have lived in Wales since 1979.
My stories touch on the Welsh Gothic & its most powerful motif: the ghost. They concern the nature of magic & how it threads through the fabric of our lives. I explore possibilities: the fine line between the everyday & the time-shifting world of enchantment. My books are also firmly rooted in reality. I write about family relationships: how people, women in particular, respond to loss & how they survive. My first four books are set in Wales, where I have lived for several decades: a place whose legends & landscapes inform my writing.

My newest book, Only May was published on 19 May 2022.

Ghostbird, my first novel, was published in March 2016. It was a Guardian Readers’ Choice for 2016 & in the same year was longlisted for the Not the Booker Prize. Edna O’Brien was on the list – I’ll be dining out on that wee nugget forever…

  1. Just finished Snow Sisters. I enjoyed the atmosphere you created with Gull House and the relationship between the siblings and their mother. https://bookertalk.com/2017/11/12/snow-sisters-by-carol-lovekin/
